Governor won't meet with Oneida Tribe

FEBRUARY 23, 2001

Wisconsin Governor Scott McCallum said he will not meet with leaders of the Oneida Tribe until they fork over $4.85 million to the state.

The payment is required as part of the tribe's gaming compact with the state. But the tribe says the state breached the compact by spending the money in areas not agreed upon by the parties.

The Governor says he can only recommend where the money is spent and its up to the Legislature to appropriate the money. In either case, the tribe placed the money into an escrow account and has been trying to negotiate with the state on the issue.
