Wisconsin casino decision expected today

FEBRUARY 20, 2001 The Department of Interior under Secretary Gale Norton is expected today to issue a decision on an off-reservation casino proposed by three Ojibwe tribes in Wisconsin. The Interior in 1995 denied the proposal but the tribes and their developer challenged the decision. The Department was ordered to reconsider it. Congress also held hearings to address alleged campaign contribution improprieties. A number of tribes opposed to the casino contributed to the Democratic Party but former Secretary Bruce Babbitt was cleared of any wrongdoing. Governor Scott McCallum has said he would veto the project even if the government approves it. Get the Story:
