NM Tribes ordered to make casino payments

FEBRUARY 14, 2001

New Mexico Attorney General Patricia Madrid on Tuesday said gaming tribes must make back payments to the state if they want to settle her lawsuit or negotiate new compacts with the state.

Madrid said she is willing to negotiate with the 12 tribes if a majority want to pay back the money. So far, only the Mescalero Apache Tribe and Pojoaque Pueblo said they will make back payments but only if half the money goes to Indian education.

Madrid last year filed suit against the tribes because they stopped paying a 16 percent revenue sharing rate as required by their 1997 compacts. The tribes now want the Legislature to negotiate new compacts with a lower rate.
