Residents of northeastern Connecticut reacted positively and negatively to the idea that the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts might seek land in their region and eventually open a casino there.

Some welcome a casino, saying it will stimulate the economy. Others say they want to be compensated should the tribe seek a casino while some oppose it entirely.

The tribe is based in Massachusetts but has traditional territory in northeastern Connecticut. The tribe has not definitely ruled out land claims there and has not discussed any ideas for economic development.

The tribe received preliminary recognition last Friday. It is on hold, pending review by political appointees of President George W. Bush.
