Town urged to talk with tribes

DECEMBER 1, 2000

A consultant for the Connecticut town of North Stonington on Thursday urged its officials not to ignore three local tribes it has opposed on various issues.

The town is opposing the expansion of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation's reservation. They are also fighting the federal recognition of the Eastern Pequot and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribes.

Representatives from all three tribes were present last night at a meeting in which a report the consultant prepared for the town was discussed. The report focuses on the town's future planning and development, but some have questioned a recommendation that the town negotiate with the tribes on various issues.
