Cherokee Nation approves car tags

JANUARY 16, 2001

The council of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma on Monday approved issuing its own car tags.

A dozen or so tribes offer car tags, typically at a lower cost than the state. The Cherokee would be the largest and is earmarking part of the money from the tags to schools in the tribe's 14-county area.

The tribe also might enter into a compact with the state to coordinate licensing.
