NOVEMBER 3, 2000 The city of Española is still waiting to discuss a casino proposed by Santa Clara Pueblo. The mayor told The Albuquerque Journal that the Pueblo wanted to discuss the proposal with tribal members before meeting with the city. The tribe and the city had planned to meet earlier this week but that didn't happen. The Pueblo wants to open a casino on the main highway in Española. The same highway houses casinos nearby at San Juan Pueblo and Pojoaque Pueblo, but Santa Clara doesn't operate one currently. The Pueblo, however, already has a gaming compact with the state. The Pueblo says the property they own can be used immediately for gaming because it falls within their Spanish land grant. But the city says both the Department of Interior and the Governor have to approve it, because currently, the land is not considered Indian Country. The tribe would have the land placed into trust first. Get the Story:
