About 73 percent of homes in rural Alaska villages have safe drinking water and sanitation systems, according to state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The department oversees the Village Safe Water Program, started five years ago. Then, about half of rural households had modern plumbing.

Since then, the program has brought better sanitation to 191 villages and 16,458 home, said the DEC. The program gets $90 million from state and federal sources, with specific funds set aside for Alaska Native villages.
