Conn. to hear jurisdiction dispute

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2001 The Connecticut Supreme Court has agreed to consider whether state courts have jurisdiction over injury lawsuits that occur on the Mohegan Reservation. A Superior Court judge says yes, but the tribe disagrees. The tribe says any disputes which happen on tribal land must be adjudicated in tribal court. The Department of Justice and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation have filed briefs in support of the tribe. A lawyer for the woman who claims she was hurt at the tribe's casino, however, says tribal courts are discriminatory. The woman is suing employees of the tribe, not tribal officials. Get the Story:
