The New York town of Verona has "serious deficiencies" that cost taxpayers money despite despite the Oneida Nation having paid $372,000 in mortgage taxes, a state audit has found.

A reconciliation of the town's finances for 1999 and 2000 has proven so troublesome that state auditors have given up. In 1999, for instance, the town ended up with a surplus due to the Oneida Nation's $70 million mortgage.

The town has been wanting the Oneida Nation to pay taxes on property the tribe owns. But a federal judge said the land is Indian Country and free from local taxation.
