OCTOBER 18, 2000

For the fourth year in a row, the Oneida Nation rejected their appropriation of funds from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, citing financial independence.

The tribe this year turned down $1.2 million. In total, they have refused almost $4.7 million in funds since 1998, when they became the first tribe ever to do so.
