Ojibwe leader makes annual address

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2002 Mille Lacs Ojibwe chairwoman Melanie Benjamin gave her State of the Band address on Tuesday, focusing largely on a legal challenge by a Minnesota county. The Mille Lacs County is moving to sue the tribe to determine the jurisdiction of 61,000 acres of land near Lake Mille Lacs. Benjamin said the land belongs to the band under an 1855 treaty.
