Seminole deals scrutinized

TUESDAY, MARCH 19, 2002

Former Seminole Chief Jim Billie entered his Florida tribe into a number of business deals that have resulted in little or no payoff.

One was a housing construction venture for which Billie secured $300,000. The tribe got nothing out of the project but Billie got a $15,000 lot.

Billie also put $800,000 of tribal money into the Lightning Casino on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. The facility was closed last year after failing to pay taxes and the tribe lost its investment.
