MONDAY, MARCH 18, 2002

In a Federal Register notice published today, he Bureau of Indian Affairs sets aside its decision to take 165 acres of land into trust for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

The Clinton administration in 1996 approved the request for seven parcels of land in the towns of Ledyard and North Stonington. Along with the town of Preston and state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, the decision was challenged in court.

The state won at the federal court level but lost on appeal to the 2nd Circuit. The tribe then decided to drop its trust land petition.

Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb's March 5 document makes notice of the withdrawal.
