Several religious groups in Washington have sent letters in support of the Duwamish Tribe's federal recognition.

The leaders asked Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to recognize the tribe. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb signed a final determination last fall that said the Duwamish did not meet federal standards for acknowledgment.

His decision came after former acting Assistant Secretary Michael Anderson agreed to recognize the tribe on the last day of the Clinton administration. That ruling reversed a preliminary ruling by Ada Deer, the first head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs under former President Bill Clinton.
