Judge dismisses 'other' Mohegans

Just how many Mohegan tribes are there? Officially, only one, as a federal judge's recent ruling shows.

U.S. District Court Judge Janet B. Arterton dismissed a lawsuit the Native American Mohegans filed against the federally recognized Mohegan Tribe, the Bureau of India Affairs and the state of Connecticut. She also refused to act on the group's recognition petition, saying the BIA has jurisdiction over the matter for now.

This group of Mohegans appears to be different from the Mohegan Tribe and Nation, Confederation of the Mohegan-Pequot American Indian Nation and Affiliated Tribes. That group has run into numerous legal problems with a local city.
