Oneida land deal being rejected

Joining a chorus of critics, the Oneida First Nation of Ontario, Canada, said a proposal to settle the tribe's land claim is "insulting," reports to The Syracuse Post-Standard.

The same report notes that the Brothertown Indian Nation, a non-federally recognized group, opposes the agreement. "The Oneidas (of New York) can't be in a position of settling the claim to land they don't own," a tribal attorney told the paper.

As if that weren't enough, the Department of Justice isn't planning on paying half of a $500 million settlement of the Oneida land claim because the Bush administration was not a party to the agreement.

New York Gov. George Pataki (R) had suggested the government fork up money. But DOJ spokesperson told The Albany Times-Union that won't be happening.

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin has already rejected the deal to settle the decades old claim on 250,000 acres of land.
