Navajo Nation approves royalty funds

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2002

The Navajo Nation tribal council on Monday approved more than half a million in one-time grants for tribal members who have not received their trust fund checks since November.

The checks are in limbo due an Internet-related shutdown at the Department of Interior. The department never provided safeguards for computer systems which housed the trust assets of 300,000 American Indians, so a federal court is overseeing efforts to correct the problems.

Still, the department hasn't convinced special master Alan Balaran that it has all the security measures in place. Balaran has given permission to turn on one computer system that will allow grazing payments to be processed.

Oil and gas payments are handled by a third system whose status is in limbo.
