A city in New York has asked a federal appeals court to review a ruling that said land purchased by the Oneida Nation automatically becomes Indian Country if it is in the tribe's land claim area.

The tribe had won a significant victory when a federal judge made that ruling back in June. The city of Sherrill, however, believes the judge was wrong.

The tribe has purchased properties in its 250,000-acre land claim area that was originally part of its reservation but illegaly taken by the state of New York. Local governments continue to try and tax these properties, however.
