FBI announces reorganization
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2001

The Department of Interior isn't the only one trying to make major changes to its bureaucratic structure. FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III on Monday announced his own initiative.

In striking simliarities to the Interior plan, Mueller said the overhaul will enable him to have more control over his agency by creating new assistant positions. The changes also come in response to embarrassing the bureau has seen in recent years, he said, but were timed with the heightened emphasis on terrorism.

And magically, the reorganization has already been completed.

This time, however, Congress actually approved the changes. Or so the FBI said. But some critics say the changes may not correct years of mishaps that have tainted the FBI's image.
