FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2001 A Connecticut group claiming to be a federally recognized tribe will stop being fined from the city of Norwich because of improvements made to a building. The Mohegan Tribe and Nation Inc., Confederation of the Mohegan-Pequot American Indian Nation and Affiliated Tribes was refusing to allow city inspectors onto its property, saying the city needed a federal order. The city had imposed more than $7,000 fines for building code violations. The city now says the group's leader, Moigu Standing Bear, has made the necessary changes and won't continue to be fined.
