Acceptance of Crow charter doubted

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has officially approved a new constitution adopted by the Crow Tribe of Montana but critics doubt whether it will be accepted by the membership as a whole.

Several hundred members, in fact, called to order in October a tribal council the new constitution disbanded. Others occupied the tribal headquarters briefly in protest last month.

But by approving the charter, the BIA has said leadership of the tribe doesn't rest with the council any longer. Tribal dissidents are considering a lawsuit to force the issue to the courts.
