Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday said the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin is willing to settle its part of an outstanding land claim against the state of New York.

Schumer said the tribe would drops its claim in exchange for a casino in the Catskills region of New York. Gov. George Pataki (R) is authorized to negotiate up to three casinos in the lucrative market.

Schumer believes that the Oneida Nation of New York and the Oneida First Nation of Canada would be more likely to drop their claims if their Wisconsin relatives came to a settlement.

The Supreme Court has ruled the Oneida are due compensation for 250,000 acres of stolen land. But through 25 years of the claim, the sides have not been able to agree on a settlement.
