THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2001

The mayor for a Connecticut town on Wednesday said he was leaning against resuming discussions with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation over trust land.

Wesley Johnson of Ledyard has already dropped out of talks but has been encouraged to return to the table by the local media and a colleague, First Selectman Robert Congdon of Preston. Congdon wants to continue discussions.

First Selectman Nicholas H. Mullane of North Stonington had also dropped out. Both he and Johnson said they weren't satisfied with the tribe's offer to limit land-into-trust applications to 880 acres over 35 years.

Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) had arranged several meetings between the towns and the tribe. He wants to know if the talks will continue by December 25.
