Omaha elections: Ballots and fry bread

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2001

Voter turnout for elections on the Omaha Reservation has always been high, at 80 to 90 percent.

A lot is at stake and each election turns out dozens of candidates seeking just seven at-large council positions. But it doesn't hurt that food is offered all day long by the candidates, turning election day, which is an official holiday, into one of the largest celebrations on the northeastern Nebraska reservation.

Voters cast their ballots yesterday. The votes are still being hand counted and results are expected today.
