A special committee of the Wisconsin Legislature has recommended the state formally acknowledge the sovereignty of 11 federally recognized tribes.

The effort would help raise awareness, said the committee. It would also ensure the impact of bills on tribes is considered, said state Rep. Terry Musser, a Republican.
