A group called the Mohegan Tribe and Nation Inc., Confederation of the Mohegan-Pequot Americans is fighting with city officials in Connecticut over its alleged sovereignty and building codes.

With fines now totaling $6,450, the group says Norwich officials cannot enter a building it owns without a federal marshal or a court order. The group claims it has been recognized as a sovereign tribe by a recent State Supreme Court decision.

The building the group owns is tax exempt but prior to purchase in 1996, there was a lien placed on the property. It is unknown if the group will have to pay the debt.
