Bush would defend Ashcroft on records

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2001 President Bush is prepared to invoke executive privilege to keep secret documents Attorney General John Ashcroft doesn't want to release to a House committee. White House officials told The Washington Post Bush backs keeping more than 12 sets of documents regarding the prosecution and handling of several high-profile cases. Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.) plans to subpoena them today. Burton has said Ashcroft is being hypocritical because Ashcroft sought the same type of records as a Senator. Executive privilege is a presidential power but it has limits. Get the Story:
