Duwamish Tribe to fight on

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2001

Saying the Washington tribe will not stand for "shabby treatment," Duwamish chairwoman Cecile Hansen said the group will continue to fight for federal recognition.

Former Assistant Secretary Ada Deer in 1996 denied recognition to the Duwamish, who trace their lineage to Chief Seattle. Acting Assistant Secretary Michael Anderson reversed the finding on January 19, the last full day of the Clinton administration.

The finding was never published in the Federal Register because President Bush held back for review all decisions made in the final days of the Clinton administration.
