Pequot tribe tries to assuage fears

SEPTEMBER 28, 2000

Amid fears that the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation will continue to enlarge its reservation in Connecticut, the tribe's lawyer said they aren't interested in buying more land right now and that the Department of Interior would turn down "ridiculous" requests anyway.

Jackson King said the tribe hasn't made many land purchases recently. But he said they get offers all the time.

A judge on Monday said, theoretically, nothing can prevent the tribe from attempting to bring more land into trust. However, it is the Department of Interior's final say on whether or not that will happen.
