Tribes to receive recycled homes
SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

More than 40 familues on the Northern Cheyenne, Fort Belknap and Rocky Boys reservations in Montana will receive recycled Air Force base homes as part of a national project called Operation Walking Shield.

The project was started in 1994 when a Lakota engineer found out that homes on an air force base in North Dakota were going to be demolished. Congress later authorized funding to carry out the process of moving homes from air force bases to reservations.

The three tribes have received more than 50 homes from Malmstrom Air Force Base since 1999. It will cost from $35,000 to $38,000 to move the homes, paid for mostly by the tribes.

The program ends in 2002.
