The Oneida Nation and the US government can't name 20,000 private landowners in its land claims suit against the state of New York and two counties, ruled District Court Judge Neal P. McCurn.

In 1998, the tribe and the Department of Justice asked the court to add some 20,000 local landowners to their lawsuit. But McCurn said adding them would only complicate matters.

The tribe, the US government, and the state have failed to come to an agreement over settlement of the tribe's land claims. The won its case in the Supreme Court in 1980, but disputes over potential acreage to be returned, jurisdiction, taxation, and regulation have prevented the parties from coming to a settlement of 250,000 acres of land illegaly taken from the tribe without federal consent.
