SEPTEMBER 14, 2000

Held in federal custody for nine months, Wen Ho Lee finally went free on Wednesday after pleading guilty to one lower felony count of mishandling military secrets.

Lee also received an apology from US District Judge James A. Parker. Parker accused Attorney General Janet Reno, Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, and New Mexico's former U.S. Attorney John Kelly of mishandling the case.

Lee has returned to his home in White Rock, a community near the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
