The Department of Justice will start a nationwide study on racial profiling but police departments won't be required to participate, officials said on Monday.

Assistant Attorney General Ralph Boyd said departments can't be forced to participate because it will undermine trust. Researchers will help the Justice Department with the study.

Researchers from University of South Dakota are currently conducting a racial profiling study in the state. Many American Indians say they are singled out by police based only on their race.
