Former nurse takes over Pequot Tribe

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2001

Marcia Jones Flowers is a week into her position as chairwoman of the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut.

Flowers, 55, was elected by tribal voters for a two-year turn on July 28. She is a former nurse who received a scholarship to nursing school and had a perfect score on her licensing exam.

Flowers spreviously served as the coordinator for the tribe's federal recognition effort. She often held genealogy classes to show others how to trace their ancestry.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is set to make a final determination on the tribe's status by the end of the year.
