FBI under investigation for fraud scheme

TUESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2001 The Senate Judiciary Committee has directed the General Accounting Office to investigate a fake travel voucher scheme that took place at the FBI in 1997. Known as "Pottsgate," it was already the subject of an internal review. But almost no one received disciplinary action for submitting fake travel expenditures to attend a retirement party for former deputy FBI director Larry Potts. The FBI agent who conducted the probe said he has been subjected to threats and retaliation for his other inquiries, most notably an investigation of the 1992 Ruby Ridge debacle. In 1999, Justice Department officials recommended former FBI Director Louis J. Freeh be censured for the Idaho siege but a former member of the Clinton administration waited until January of this year to reject disciplinary action. Get the Story:
