Mohawk Tribe discussing land settlement

MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 2001 The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and the state of New York on Friday formally entered into negotiations to settle the tribe's long-standing land claim. The meeting was the first the tribe has accepted with the state. It comes just two weeks after the two signed a gaming agreement for an off-reservation casino. The Mohawk land claim covers about 15,000 acres, the smallest of tribes in the state. In 1999, the state had proposed a settlement of $28 million plus $1 million a year for 50 years along with title to two islands and discounts on electricity. Get the Story:
