FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 2001

The Oglala Lakota Tribal Council on Wednesday voted to pay President Harold Salway $36,000 in back pay for suspending him last year.

Salway had been accused of using $30,000 in money earmarked for tornado victims to pay for a pow-wow. But a hearing was never set to discuss the claim.

Salway then asked the council to pay for attorney fees and back pay. The council voted 9-8 to pay Salway the money, minus a $16,500 personal loan he took out to buy a car.
