Racial profiling bill debated

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001

A Senate Judiciary subcommittee on Wednesday held a hearing on a bill to ban racial profiling among law enforcement agencies.

The bill would require law enforcement agencies to keep data on police stops. It would also allow lawsuits by the Department of Justice or individuals to stop certain police practices.

Some Senators, however, said the bill goes too far to prevent police from doing their job. Police who testified at the hearing claimed that profiling is not a nationwide problem.
