The Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara and Assiniboine Tribe will meet this weekend to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty.

About 10,000 from tribes throughout the Plains made the journey to eastern Wyoming for the treaty gathering. The treaty called for peace between the United States and the various tribes along with various payments and other agreements on land usage.

Like all treaties, however, it was quickly broken. While still revered by tribal descendants today, the 150 years that have passed are seen by many as filled with dishonor.

An executive order later established a reservation in North Dakota for the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara tribes. The Assiniboine Tribe were established on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana.
