JULY 7, 2000 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut purchased 87.1 acres last week. A Tribal spokesman declined to make a comment about the purchase or any future purchases in this area. The spokesman said that the tribe plans to hold its annual Schemitzun festival in September at this site. The Connecticut towns of Ledyard, North Stonington, and Preston have been opposing the expansion of the tribe's reservation. The towns are eagerly awaiting a decision from the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on the addition of 165 acres to the reservation. In 1995, the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs approved the tribe's request to bring the land into trust. But a federal judge in Connecticut in 1998 ruled that the BIA erred in granting the approval. The Justice Department appealed that decision to the Court of Appeals on behalf of the BIA. Get the Story:
