Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) was one Republican who broke with party lines last week to kill a proposal to allow Mexican trucks to travel freely on US highways.

President Bush and other GOP members are pushing to allow the trucks on US highways as a means of expanding free trade. But Democrats, and Campbell, want the trucks to adhere to tough inspection procedures at the border.

In response, the GOP says the rules are anti-Mexican and anti-Hispanic. The standards are part of a Democrat-sponsored amendment.

Campbell has previously questioned why the US wants to allow Mexican trucks to travel on national highways when Native Americans suffer from such high unemployment rates.
