Voters of the Eastern Pequot Tribe of Connecticut went to the polls on Saturday, electing Marcia Jones Flowers as their new chairwoman.

The position lasts two years. Vice Chairman Mark Sebastian retained his seat while Lynn Powers was elected secretary and Ronald Wolf Jackson was treasurer.

The tribe is recognized by the state and has a number of self-government powers similar to those of federally recognized tribes. The state, however, is challenging the tribe's federal status.

Former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover last year extended preliminary recognition to the tribe. A final decision is expected by the end of the year but court battles may keep the tribe in limbo.
