Democrats in the Senate on Wednesday denied being anti-Hispanic amid criticism of safety standards they want to impose on Mexican trucks traveling on US highways.

Democrats say they aren't opposed to Mexican trucks coming into the US but that they want to be sure Americans are safe. They are supporting a measure which requires Mexican trucks to pass safety checks before entering the US.

But Republicans say the standards violate the North American Free Trade Agreement. They went further yesterday and said Democrats of harboring anti-Mexican and anti-Hispanic sentiments after President Bush urged Congress not to discriminate against Mexico.

Bush counts Mexican President Vicente Fox as one of his allies.
