Battle brews over Mexican trucks

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2001

A plan to allow Mexican trucks on US highways is facing opposition from Democrats in the Senate who say the safety of Americans is at risk.

To address their concerns, they have imposed a number of safety measures on Mexican trucks. But Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Phil Gramm (R-Tex.) are threatening a filibuster or delay on the standards, which are part of a fiscal year 2002 transportation spending bill.

During a Indian Affairs Committee hearing last week, Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) questioned the wisdom of the whole plan. American Indians on reservations suffer from the worst rates of unemployment so the country should be trying to find them jobs instead of pushing a plan that would only seem to benefit Mexican nationals.
