TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2001 Authorities in Colorado on Monday defended their actions in the case of a gay, transgendered Navajo teen whose body was found beaten to death near Cortez last month. Police say Fred Martinez Jr.'s mother did not report her son missing even after she had not seen him for five days. Martinez went to a carnival on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation and was found dead June 21. Martinez's mother said she called police on June 18 and June 20 but police say they have no records of the calls. Get the Story:
