TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2001 By a voice vote, the House on Monday approved a $17.6 billion fiscal year 2002 Department of Justice spending bill. The bill establishes a permanent Violence Against Women Office. Congress reauthorized the Violence Against Women ACt last year, which has provided tribes with funds to establish domestic violence programs. The new office will report directly to the Assistant Attorney General. The bill also establishes an independent Inpector General to oversee the FBI. The agency has come under fire in recent years for mishandling a number of high-profile cases. Former US Attorney Robert S. Mueller III has been nominated for the position of FBI Director. His Senate confirmation hearing is scheduled for July 30 before the Judiciary Committee. The bill goes onto the Senate for consideration. Fiscal year 2002 begins October 1. Get H.R.2215:
