JULY 24, 2000 Seven of the eight incumbents running for re-relection to the Mohegan Tribal Council won the Saturday, June 22 primary held by the tribe. Chairman Roland J. Harris and Vice Chairwoman Jayne Fawcett were the top vote getters in the crowded election. 55 candidates were seeking 9 positions. The primary whittled the group down to 18. The final election is scheduled for August 27. Members of the tribe and investors are paying close attention to the primary to see if any incumbents were ousted. The election is important because it is the first since the tribe opened its casino in 1994. Salaries for the council range from $200,000 to $400,000, plus bonuses. The positions last 5 years. Issues facing the 1,360-member tribe include the expansion of the casino as well as other business and cultural ventures. The eligible voting pool is 850 members. Get the Story:
