Private landowners wanted off land claims

THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2001 Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday called on the Department of Justice to remove private landowners from the land claims lawsuits of tribes in his state. The Justice Department in January said it would so, but Schumer says the Bush administration has yet to follow through. In a controversial move, the Clinton administration sought to add 10,000 private landowner to the Oneida Nation's long-running land claim. A federal judge last year denied the request. Get the Story:
