MONDAY, JULY 16, 2001 Voters of the Crow Tribe of Montana on Saturday approved by 660-449 a new constitution that establishes a legislative branch and lengthens the terms of office for elected leaders. Voters will elect three representatives from each of the six districts on the reservation. Voters will also elect judges. The terms of office have been doubled from two years to four. So the current set of leaders will have their terms automatically extended to 2004 instead of facing re-election next year. The changes were opposed by a number of tribal members on Saturday. They said the tribe wasn't following proper procedure to change the constitution. They also said the constitution doesn't go far enough to prevent abuses of power of tribal leaders.
